Publishing by installment is a new game for me, as reading on line may be for you. I find the process exciting, as it gives a writer immediate feedback. If the writing's good, readers will request more. If not, everyone is saved a lot of energy and expense. The installment that I'm presenting free of charge is part of a large work dear to my heart. The immense research I've put into this story is nothing compared to the emotional stock I've invested in it. No, the ancestors I write about never existed. Still, I would like to think that they were really and truly my own. If the first installment catches your attention, I hope you will read on. It gets better!

The clash of civilizations in the new world, colonialism, slavery, immigration, racial injustice and integration, improbable marriages, startling births and the uniquely American spirit that binds disparate peoples, these are the background themes of The Onion Legacy, a work of fiction based on factual events.
The story recounts the making of the multiracial Osborne-Finlay family, from the early days of navigation to the 1950’s. The narrator’s link to the past is his Great-Aunt Della, who sees history as a 13,000 year struggle between movers and mopers. She colors her fabulous facts and fictions with her own brand of philosophy. Her tales both inspire and worry the narrator ; to strive to become a mover is noble, but why, in the end, do so many movers become mopers? Can the narrator avoid the fate of a mover-cum-moper like his aunt?
The novel is divided into five books : MELBA, ARCHY, LYDIA, DELLA and HETT.
